This week John’s links cover what HR people do all day in small outfits, a look at linear regression, where top talent in the tech industry will work next, the gig economy, and survey results on developers from StackOverflow.
- What Do HR People (in small cos) Do All Day?
Almost 60% of it is paperwork, answering questions and handling ‘people issues’. - What is Linear Regression?
There are those who say that all of the Algorithm – Predictive_Analytics – Machine_Learning – Artificial_Intelligence – Big_Data stuff we see in HR is nothing more than a badly executed linear regression. “Linear regression is the most basic and commonly used predictive analysis. Regression estimates are used to describe data and to explain the relationship between one dependent variable and one or more independent variables. At the center of the regression analysis is the task of fitting a single line through a scatter plot.” It’s badly executed because you’re not supposed to begin with historical data as the training set. - Where Top Talent in the Tech Industry Will Likely Work Next
From Paysa comes a flow of info about how talent percolates around Silicon Valley. It provides the beginnings of a model that could be applied in many geographies. (via Hung Lee) - 67% of Workers in the Gig Economy Wouldn’t Choose It Again
It’s harder than it looks, folks. - Developer Survey Results 2016
StackOverflow’s annual report on the state of developerness. 56% of software developers do not have a college degree.
