Big Picture
- The Human Strategy: A Conversation With Alex “Sandy” Pentland. “Where does culture come from? How can we select for culture in evolution when it’s the individuals that reproduce? What you need is something that selects for the best cultures and the best groups, but also selects for the best individuals because they’re the things that transmit the genes.?” Pentland is describing the ‘truth’ quotient required to make actual AI work. It seems a long way off.
HR’s View
- The Last Recruiter: AI and Recruiting. Rajhav Singh (Korn Ferry) writing in ERE. Fascinating that recruiting giant Korn Ferry is prophesying the end of recruiting (unless the profession redefines itself to provide more value)
- It’s Recruiting Season for AI’s Top Talent, and Things Are Getting a Little Zany. Starting salaries at $300K. Lots of links
- The War for AI Talent. Dr John Sullivan adds some serious discipline to the conversation
Execution
- 5 Trends In Artificial Intelligence That Are Changing The Way We Work. Like much of the published material, this is a product of a marketing department. Still, it’s a good summary of the real state of the art.
Tutorial
- The Future of Work: Harnessing the Limitless Potential of Machne Learning and IOT. Great course outline for your in-house training.
- Beyond Distributive Fairness in Algorithmic Decision Making: Feature Selection for Procedurally Fair Learning. Decidedly not fluffy. Reminder – the way you read an academic paper with a lot of math in it is to scan past the math to the explanations and conclusions. This one is essentially the beginning of adding an ethical sense to algorithmic decision making. There is a very long way to go.
Quote of the Week
“Human behavior is determined as much by the patterns of our culture as by rational, individual thinking. These patterns can be described mathematically, and used to make accurate predictions. We’ve taken this new science of “social physics” and expanded upon it, making it accessible and actionable by developing a predictive platform that uses big data to build a predictive, computational theory of human behavior.”

Curate means a variety of things: from the work of vicar entrusted with the care of souls to that of an exhibit designer responsible for clarity and meaning. At the core, it means something about the importance of empathy in organization. HRIntelligencer is an update on the comings and goings in the Human Resource experiment with Artificial Intelligence, Digital Employees, Algorithms, Machine Learning, Big Data and all of that stuff. We present a few critical links with some explanation. The goal is to give you a way to surf the rapidly evolving field without drowning in information. We offer a timeless curation of the intersection of HR and the machines that serve it. We curate the emergence of Machine Led Decision Making in HR.
