Recruiting Is Local

I don’t think much of best practices and big generalizations about our profession. Recruiting practices that work famously at Google are recipes for disaster in a factory near Macon, Ga. What works as personality assessment in Minneapolis is downright dumb in Baton Rouge.

091202 Organizational Aikido

This presentation contains the insights I’ve developed from a couple of years of looking at organizational demographics. The idea of Organizational Aikido is that organizations naturally want to evolve in a certain way. Leading them means understanding the natural tendencies and leaving them alone unless you want to work really hard. The key to maintaining […]

090713 The Reformatting

The Reformatting Robert Reich, the Clinton era Labor Secretary, offers a wise view of the outcome of our current economic turmoil. In ‘When Will The Recovery Begin? Never‘, Reich outlines his view that the next phase will not be a traditional ‘recovery’. Rather, since we’re starting over, Reich sees the next wave of economic behavior […]

Relocation Trends

Relocation Trends (April 07, 2009) This is a really good time to figure out the future of your workforce. The downturn changes a lot of things. If you’re still at your desk (and lots of folks in HR are gone), start wondering and planning. After this is all over, we’re going to be living in […]

Just Work

Just Work (Mar 26, 2009) There’s an emerging movement. It’s something like the slow food movement as it applies to work. Slow food is an antidote to fast food. Before automation and the various management technologies of the 80s and 90s, service […]

080827 Population III

(August 27, 2008) I am going to stick with the pyramid idea just a little longer. The theme is so embedded in our world view that it shapes the way we see, imagine and execute our possibilities. The "Recruiting Funnel", where masses of candidates are winnowed down to a select few, is an example of […]

080826 Population II

(August 26, 2008) For the entire history of the human race, with virtually no exceptions. the age distribution of population has had the shape of a pyramid. As people get older, there are fewer of them. The pyramid shape means that there are few old people and lots of young people. The older that people […]
