    The real question is whether content or advertising comes first. When ads are the way to monetize the core business, the ads get short shrift. Seems to me that early day advertisers became newspapers and not vice versa. My vote remains with the Jobing model. Build the ad base and then the content base.
  • Small Is The New Big On The Way To Hyper-Local
    Intimacy is the catch phrase in the post crumple economy. Local is grassroots up, not top down. As the idea of “too big to fail” bites the dust, the more fragile and vibrant micro-economy is where the action is. The big market recession is not inherently matched with a local market phenomenon. The local niches remain discrete and dependent on local economics.
  • Watching the Times struggle (and what you can learn)
    Hitting home runs is nice. Eating regularly is nicer. The New York Times is rapidly waning in influence because it swings for the fence. Here. Seth Godin offers a long set of solutions. He gets it right when he notes that the Times is local and an advertising platform. It seems like the folks in New York forgot both of those things. Now, salvation has to come from rebuilding. The lesson? Start over quickly and don’t grasp at your history.
